Tested in Germany, built in the UK and arriving in America for the first time; the Civic Type R was finally revealed yesterday at the Geneva Motor Show. This highly-anticipated model will be unlike any other Civic before with a turbocharged powertrain, significantly upgraded body and chassis, six-speed manual transmission and other components that were proved worthy on the Nürburgring track. You can expect the Type R in dealerships later this Spring.

Powertrain and Chassis

A 2.0-liter DOHC, direct-injected and turbocharged i-VTEC in-line four-cylinder engine powers the Type R, and it’s capable of producing 306 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. A new single-mass flywheel reduces clutch inertia on the short-throw six-speed manual transmission by 25 percent.

The chassis includes a model-exclusive "spring, damper and bushing settings, a Dual-Axis front suspension setup, four-wheel adaptive suspension system, a dual-pinion electric power steering system, and a helical limited-slip front differential." These upgrades were designed to improve cornering and reduce torque. Brembo 4-pot aluminum calipers and 20-inch alloy wheels with 245/30R 20 Continental ContiSportContact 6 performance tires complete the system.

Driving

Drivers can choose from three distinct modes – Comfort, Sport (default) and +R – that adjust the vehicle to fit the setting. Steering, throttle response, transmission rev-matching, vehicle stability assist and adaptive damper system will all adjust with each mode, which gives the driver a dynamic experience.

The Type R also has enhancements in responsiveness thanks to a 38 percent increase in torsional rigidity and 45 percent increase in bending rigidity compared to the previous model. Cabin noise and vibration were both reduced as well from a special structural adhesive. Other body changes include the use of ultra-high strength steel on the structure and aluminum on the hood, which resulted in a 35-pound weight reduction.

Styling

The Type R will only be available as a sporty hatchback, and the exterior styling has been described by Car and Driver as “wild.” It boats a hood scoop, red accent line, a rear wing, and three center-mounted exhaust outlets and a red Honda badge. The design isn’t for the weak-hearted, but it will make owners feel like they are driving a one-of-a-kind vehicle.
