We have been hearing a lot about global Honda expansion over the last few years, however none of it has been in Japan, its country of origin. That is until the automaker decided to open a new facility, its first since 1964. Just two hours outside of Tokyo, Honda is preparing to unveil its manufacturing plant in Yorii, Japan later this summer.

The new facility is part of the automaker's plan to shift production from its older, outdated plant in Sayama, to the innovative plant with updated technology. It is expected to generate an annual capacity of about 250,000 vehicles which will be sold exclusively on the Japanese market.  In addition, it will create a need for 3,800 jobs both on site and at supplier sites, and help to boost Yorii's economy as smaller businesses will experience an increase in traffic.

Of course the next question is, which new Honda vehicles will the new plant focus on manufacturing? Although nothing has been confirmed, it is expected that models like the Honda Fit, which is already a best-seller in Japan, will be slated for production at the Yorii facility.

As more details regarding the opening of the plant are released, we will be sure to keep you updated right here on our Norris Honda blog.
